Biographical Details


Dr. Thein Zaw was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of the Bank in November 2025. He brings more than four decades of extensive experience in banking and finance and has played a pivotal role in shaping Myanmar’s banking sector. Dr. Thein Zaw began his career at the Union Bank of Burma in 1976 and later joined the Myanmar Agricultural and Rural Development Bank in 1985. From 1996 to 2013, he served in various leadership roles at the Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM), including as a member of the CBM Board of Directors (Executive Director, 2007–2010). He also served as a CBM representative on the Board of Directors of the Myanmar Economic Bank (Non-Executive Director, 2010–2013).

Following his distinguished public service career, Dr. Thein Zaw transitioned to the private sector, where he served as Vice Chairman of the Board at CHID Bank (2013–2015) and Shwe Bank (2015–2020). In these roles, he provided strategic leadership, strengthened governance frameworks, and advanced operational improvements. Additionally, Dr. Thein Zaw has authored several influential publications on Myanmar’s banking and economic landscape, including Evolution of Money and Banking in Myanmar (2020), Establishing a Bank (2022), Monetarist and Banker (2024), and Currency First Policy (2025).

Dr. Thein Zaw holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Assumption University (Thailand), a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Yangon Institute of Economics, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Yangon.
